GOVERNMENT SERVICES
Administration of the town is provided by a four-member town
council and a mayor. Administrative staff positions include a
town clerk, a town attorney, and a building inspector. Planning
and zoning activities are conducted by a five-member
commission and appeals are heard by a five member board of
adjustment. The Big Water Town Marshal currently provides law
enforcement in Big Water and a municipal justice of the peace
handles local misdemeanors. Fire protection is provided by a
well-equipped and trained volunteer fire department housed in a
2-bay station next to the Town Hall.
UTILITIES
Water is supplied by the Glen Canyon Special Service District in
Big Water. Impact fee for first time users is $2,140 with an
additional installation fee of $561 and the monthly use charge
is $15 for the first 10,000 gallons and $1.15 for each additional
1,000 gallons. Power service is provided by Garkane Energy
Association, a rural electric cooperative which charges about
6.25 cents per kilowatt hour. Propane is available from several
sources: Garkane Propane from Kanab, Utah, Lake Powell
Propane, Amerigas and R & R Solar and Wind all from Page,
Arizona. Local land line telephone service is provided by
QWest out of Phoenix, Arizona and can be reached by calling
866-946-6381; we are on the Arizona Exchange and it may be
helpful to mention this fact when dealing with the operators.
Long distance service is available through most major carriers.
Also available are several cell service providers: Powell
Electronic in Page, Arizona supplies Verizon Wireless service in
the area and can be reached by calling 928-645-6664. Also,
Cellular One out of Kanab, Utah at 435-644-5906 and South
Central Communications also out of Kanab, Utah at
435-644-2810 both provide cellular service.

Big Water is typical of the high desert with
plenty of sunshine and clean dry air. Located
at an elevation of 4108 feet, the town
receives an average annual precipitation of
4-10 inches, little in the amount of snow.
Summer temperatures exceed 90 degrees on
more than 100 days, with extremes of 100
degrees not uncommon. Winter maximum
temperatures are generally in the 40's and
50's with minimums below freezing.
About Us
Big Water is an incorporated community of about 400 plus
people situated on US Highway 89 just north of the Utah-Arizona
border, 57 miles from Kanab and 17 miles from Page. Big
Water is situated less than 2 miles from Lake Powell and 12
miles from Wahweap Marina.
The Big Water town site, originally called Glen Canyon City, was
first settled in the 1950s as a construction camp for workers on
the Glen Canyon Dam. Glen Canyon City was incorporated with
a new name, Big Water, on 29 Dec 1983. Although Big Water
was incorporated in December 1983, municipal government did
not become fully functional until the beginning of the following
fiscal year, which was 1 July 1984. Archival History
